The Judaica
of Arthur Silver and Wendy Silver-Gordon represents the finest in
craftsmanship from a father-and-daughter partnership that remains devoted
to the art of metalsmithing. “All of our pieces are hand-fabricated
according to our standards for excellence and for quality craftsmanship,”
says Wendy Silver-Gordon, who helped her father create jewelry for Saks
Fifth Avenue at age 13. Wendy joined her father professionally at
the jeweler’s bench in 1992 and has never been happier.
Both artists
are known for clean-lined designs that celebrate the many cherished moments
and rituals of Jewish life—marriage vows, coming of age, blessing
the home, and more. The partners fabricate their designs in silver
or gold, creating pieces that are either highly polished or highly textural,
and often three-dimensional. In many of their designs, gemstones
rest upon cascading strands of silver, or inside open squares that turn
this way and that to catch the light, and to reveal a glimpse of the Mezuzah
within.
Today, Wendy and Arthur work from studios miles apart, yet their jewelry
remains strikingly similar in look. “I began working next
to my father on his jeweler’s bench in Manhattan when I was just
a kid, so my work will always be influenced by his style, which is really
about classic, fine jewelry,” says Wendy. And for Arthur,
there is much joy in sharing his craft with his daughter, who might in
turn share it with her own children one day.
Turning to Judaica
as a complete product line was a major change for the Silvers ten
years ago. New, innovative designs that celebrate Jewish life keep
the Silvers at the forefront of a growing market for hand-crafted Judaica.
Once the Silvers began making wearable Mezuzahs, collectors could wear
elegant symbols of their Jewish faith.
Both father
and daughter look forward to many more years together as fine jewelers,
testing the waters with new innovative designs, and learning from one
another. "I've taught so many apprentices over the years,
but it was always my dream to work side-by-side with my daughter,"
says Arthur, adding "Our work just keeps improving."
Arthur and Wendy's
work has been featured in The Crafts Report, JCK and Niche Magazine, the leading
trade magazines for craft and jewelry professionals. They are winners of the 1998 and 2003 NICHE Awards, in the catagory of Judaica.
