Rosh Hashanah, also known as the Jewish New Year  falls once a year during the month of  Tishrei and occurs ten days before Yom Kippur. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah literally means “The Head Of  The Year”.

Most importantly, Rosh Hashanah represents the anniversary of creation as well as the judgment day for ALL of creation. Together, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are known as the Yamim Nora’im, which means the Days of Awe in Hebrew. In English, they are often referred to as the High Holy Days.

One major highlight and tradition of Rosh Hashanah is the blowing of the shofar.  According to some scholars, the shofar dates back to ancient times when making loud noises on the New Year was thought to scare off demons and ensure a happy start to the coming year.
